Unit of Inquiry

Learning objective – To continue to identify and understand the persuasive techniques used by various types of media.
To identify and understand the affect media has.

Learning engagements-

   Students continue to examine different newspaper articles, magazines, flyers, brochures and books.
   Students contrast and compare the differing purpose and technique used in each type of media.
   Students watch videos and discuss the various types of advertisements from India and abroad (UK, USA and Japan).
   Students discuss the purpose of commercials, the audience targeted, and the techniques used.
   Students discuss the affect that commercials have on us.
   Students present their individual work during Show and Tell.  Showcasing posters, short videos and announcements.
   Students produce a commercial or an announcement or informative account as part of their summative assessment.   
Learning objective - To understand how media has changed over the years and how it affects us.

Learning engagements-

   Students discuss the kind of audience targeted (children, adults, family, etc.) while making advertisements.
   Students discuss why commercials are so popular and the reason for them.
   Students discuss the use of humor, music, and  color.


Literacy

Reading-
Students continue reading books related to:

   Media
   Magazines for kids.
   Fiction.
   Nonfiction

Writing- 

Learning objective - To continue to write a persuasive letter/paragraph by following the writing process.

Learning engagements -

  Students present their individual commercials.
  Students work on their persuasive letter writing and discuss. 
  Students choose a topic and write/draft a persuasive letter independently. 


Mathematics

Learning objective -  To continue to understand the concept of regrouping while solving subtraction sums. Also, some students looked at the concept of rounding off numbers and estimation.
                     
Learning engagements-

   Students try more complicated subtraction problems.
   Students continue to use manipulatives, number charts as well as base ten to understand the concept of regrouping.
   Students solve subtraction sums independently.
   Some students try to round off numbers and begin to estimate.
